Why Are So Many Passengers Acting Out on Airlines Right Now? Experts Share Some Fascinating Insight

    August 7, 2021 | health.com

It’s true, people are misbehaving on flights more than ever. Humantold’s Christina Jeffrey is a clinical supervisor with insight into this bizarre trend.

By August of this year, there were already 3,810 reports of aggressive or unruly passengers on airline flights—2,786 of those were related to the federal mask mandate. Big change is difficult for most people, and the pandemic has forced us to alter so much of our lives. With airline travel already a stressful situation, adding mask mandates makes some passengers feel threatened. They get upset and transfer their feelings of frustration from the original source onto someone else, like flight attendants.

Christina Jeffrey (LMHC) believes that there are a variety of reasons for this behavior. She says, "Essentially, these people feel threatened, and often when people feel a sense of threat, they become aggressive; it's a defensive posture that they hope will defend them against the perceived source of the threat."

Heavy workloads can be harmful to students. Stress and anxiety early in life can lead to problems later in life. Mental health experts suggest that teachers rethink homework altogether.

Emmy Kang (MHC-LP) is a mental health counselor at Humantold and says that students' schoolwork can make a "big impact on their mental, physical, and emotional health." The majority of students say that after-school assignments are the primary source of stress in their lives. Today, mindfulness is talked about a lot, but rarely when it comes to assigning homework. The pandemic has forced us to re-examine everything–and the cost and reward of homework deserve a second look, too.

If You Haven’t Checked in on Your Habits Lately, Here’s Why You Should

Habits combine to create who we are. Understanding and evaluating our rituals is a worthwhile and introspective process that everyone should do periodically. How often? That varies from person to person.

Humantold’s Janay Bailey (MHC-LP) recommends reviewing habits regularly because it reinforces good behavior. Nayera Elsayed (MHC-LP) is a mental health counselor with Humantold as well and says, "Our lives are governed by our habits. Habits and rituals are dependent on our goals (or a lack thereof); whether the nature of the goal is physical, professional, spiritual, etc." There are a variety of ways to measure, understand, and enrich your daily habits. Taking the time to reassess could offer more rewards than you may think.

A couple’s relationship before they have a child is often a good indicator of how things will be after. Fostering a good relationship before your child comes into the world is vital. Research shows that at the 1-year postpartum mark, 81% of couples are still happy after having children. This insightful article offers steps you can take to ensure that your relationship stays positive through the adventure of having a child.

Humantold’s Peter Douglas (LCSW) explains, “If prior to the birth there existed a trend toward viewing your partner more critically than affirmatively, you are likely due for a painful and despairing ride.” Individual and couples therapy can be a healthy way to approach the postpartum period of a relationship as well.
