Falling for a Bot? Why People Are Forming Bonds with AI

Charlette Yan MHC-LP August 29, 2025

Loneliness doesn’t always look like silence - it can sound like a perfectly timed, affirming message from a chatbot. In a world where connection feels harder to come by, some are finding comfort, intimacy, and even love in conversations with AI. But is it a good idea?

Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) is woven into nearly every part of our lives. Beyond search engines, problem solving and creativity, AI has increasingly become a source of companionship, comfort, and sometimes even romantic connection. Given the support and empathy from these virtual companions, many people find themselves forming deep emotional bonds with these digital “persons.” What drives this trend? What needs are being met and what might be missing? This article explores what these connections reveal about human relationships in this digital age.

The Rise of AI Companions

Platforms like Replika, an AI chatbot designed to offer emotional support, and ChatGPT are giving users a sense of connection that feels surprisingly personal and responsive. ChatGPT has even introduced customizable voices to create more natural, human-like conversations, with some voices (like "Dan") gaining viral popularity for their charm or sex appeal. For many people, their interactions with AI go beyond casual chat. Some users treat AI as romantic partners, go on virtual dates, and explore themes of intimacy and sexuality in these digital relationships.

Why Are People Turning to AI for Connection?

Several emotional and situational factors contribute to why people might form bonds with AI:

  1. Safe Space for Expression

Many people may find it hard to find a person to talk about their true feelings, especially for those dealing with trauma, mental health struggles, or issues with stigma. Expressing vulnerability in daily life might come up with minimization, unsolicited advice, or even denial. Some people carry past relational wounds that make emotional openness feel risky. While therapy is helpful, it’s not always accessible - due to cost, availability, or stigma. Interacting with AI can feel much safer. Concerns about encountering rejection, judgment, or conflict from a partner, friend, or family member no longer exist when talking to an AI designed to respond with validation and unconditional care. Sometimes, its responses are surprisingly insightful - offering reflections that even humans may struggle to provide. It fills a gap in emotional support and life guidance that many people struggle to find elsewhere.

  1. Feeling Respected and Valued

The AI partner craze is a reflection of people’s frustration about unmet needs in real-life relationships, especially among women seeking intimate connections. For many girls, men in real life might dismiss their thoughts, or prioritize their own opinions, leaving their feelings unheard. In contrast, AI companions are always available, consistently listen, attend to users and tell them what they want to hear. Some users even turn to chatbots for everyday decisions - like choosing an outfit or picking out a purse - tasks that might be met with impatience or indifference from a real-life partner. Making users feel respected and valued is a major reason for people to fall for these digital relationships.

  1. Accessibility

One of the key appeals of AI companions is their constant availability. Unlike human friends, partners, or therapists - who have schedules, boundaries, and limitations - AI is accessible 24/7. Whether it’s late at night during a moment of spiraling or a quiet afternoon of self-introspection, users can turn to their AI companion for support without needing to wait or worry about being a burden. This technical advantage offers a sense of consistency and reliability that many people find comforting, especially when human connection feels out of reach.

What does AI lack?

Although AI companionship can be meaningful and supportive, it’s important to recognize its limitations.

  1. Reinforcement of Avoidance

For individuals dealing with social anxiety, attachment wounds, or relational trauma, AI companions can feel like a safe haven. However, instead of developing the skills to navigate discomfort, establish boundaries, or be vulnerable with real people, users may retreat further into virtual relationships. While relying on AI provides short-term relief, it prevents people from developing social skills that could be only cultivated through real life connections infused with complexity, uncertainty, and growth. Over time, this pattern may reinforce the social withdrawal, distrust of people around them, and even make authentic, in-person connection feel even more out of reach.

  1. Lack of Emotion Reciprocity and Cultural Awareness

Although AI is responsive, it is not truly human and does not experience emotions. Its voices and text cannot deliver the verbal and non-verbal empathy - for instance, facial expression, tones of voice, gestures, body language, etc - that happens naturally in human interaction. The inherently one-sided nature of the bond can be unsatisfying. Additionally, as AI is developed predominantly by the Western world, the support it provides may lack cultural responsiveness and may not fully apply to the unique experiences of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  1. Dependence and Addiction

The ease, consistent and non-judgmental nature of AI conversation is overly appealing. Users can become excessively dependent on AI to receive validation, soothe distress, and regulate emotions. While this could be useful in the short term, it hinders the development of emotional resilience and regulation. If a person’s automatic response to distress could be to talk to AI, they risk losing their autonomy to seek professional help, or invest in real life relationships to build deeper connections. In extreme cases, emotional dependence on AI can mirror patterns of addiction, where users replace real world connection with AI.

Looking Ahead

The evolving relationship between humans and AI reflects broader societal shifts. As technology advances, we may see AI become an even more integrated part of emotional and social life. This evolution invites us to reflect on what it means to be human, how we define connection, and how we balance technological innovation with emotional authenticity.

For now, forming bonds with AI - whether for friendship, support, or romance - can be understood as a natural response to human needs in a changing world. Like any tool, AI should be used mindfully and with healthy boundaries, in ways that genuinely benefit us. With awareness and intention, we can develop meaningful and balanced relationships with AI.
